Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information management preferred. Registration as Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Health Information Technician (RHIT) or certification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Coding specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H). Must have strong computer, verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in public speaking, presentations, and educational activities. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, CPT and ICD-9-CM and HCPCS coding, Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance procedures.
Two or more years coding experience in a health related setting.
Provide training sessions to ensure a high level of expertise in the review of physician documentation. Serve as the ICD-10 Project Manager to oversee implementation of ICD-10 and provide education to hospital employees in relation to ICD-10. Review queries generated by Clinical Documentation Specialists and Coding Specialists for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate severity for purposes of appropriate coding and reimbursement. Intervenes with physicians when necessary to ensure prompt compliance with appropriate documentation. Discuss issues related to documentation and physician responses to queries with the Executive Vice President Medical Affairs. Report when necessary to Medical Staff meetings and the Medical Executive Committee. Provide feedback and education to members of the medial staff on opportunities for documentation improvement.Provide education and assistance to Coding Specialists and Clinical Documentation Specialists on questions of documentation completeness, accuracy, and preciseness.Audit medical records as needed.Assist and contribute to the development implementation of policies and procedures as needed.
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 10-15 pounds with or without assistance.Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced environment.Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control an ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
