Protection and Controls Engineer / Project Manager

Description

TriAxis, a division of DEA, has an immediate opening for a Protection and Controls Engineer / Project Manager (P&C Engineer) who can be located in our Albuquerque, NM, Corvallis, OR, or Vancouver, WA offices. The Protection and Controls Engineer / Project Manager’s primary focus will be as a Project Manager with a focus on project development and marketing to the local electric cooperatives, renewable generation developers, nationwide electrical contractors, Native American utility authorities, and large regional utilities.  This individual should be skilled in all aspects of substation design and preparation of bidding and construction documents—ability to perform detailed design of medium to extra high voltage substations to include rigid bus design and calculations, conduit and cable sizing/routing, grounding design, physical layouts, selection of substation equipment, protection and control design and wiring diagrams, writing of substation equipment specifications, construction cost estimates, project scheduling, and QA/QC of design documents/deliverables.

Other duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for the design, calculations, and execution of substation outdoor electrical designs
  • Lead a team of engineers and technicians in utility substation design
  • Manage Projects—maintain technical, budget, and schedule performance
  • Develop scopes of work, design cost estimates, and prepare proposals for new projects
  • Communicate successfully with diverse clientele
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with clients, contractors, and vendors
  • Developing design proposals and managing design projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and contractors
  • Ability to provide training, direction, and technical leadership to staff

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • Professional Engineering License
  • 10-15 years of electrical engineering experience
  • Recent experience with business development and winning projects
  • Knowledge of substation protection & control design theories and applications
  • Knowledge of operation and design of substation SCADA and Telecom systems
  • Ability to supervise the use of CAD tools and review the design products
  • Understanding of transmission line design

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university with a focus on Power System Studies
  • Outdoor physical substation design
  • Experience working on projects for large utilities
