Summary: NIJC is seeking to hire a Special Projects Coordinating Attorney to oversee a special project that provide for the delivery of legal services to low-income immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers throughout NIJC’s service area. This position will manage a project that will provide legal screenings and representation to identified populations in a broad geographic area. The Attorney will serve as NIJC’s point of contact with the funder and high-profile stakeholders to implement the project, The Attorney will lead outreach, create legal materials and toolkits, and build intersectional networks to advance immigrant rights. The Attorney will work closely with in-house and external experts on developing innovative and efficient service delivery models.  The Attorney will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the project requirements, maintain data for reporting on project, schedule staffing, and ensure the delivery of quality legal services. The Attorney will work with supervising attorneys from NIJC’s programs to keep abreast of changes in immigration law. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage special project to ensure immigration legal services for the identified population
  • oversee the delivery of legal services to targeted population
  • Coordinate with the funder to provide legal services to develop a schedule and appropriate staffing for mobile units operated by the consulate(s)
  • Develop and monitor referral systems from partners and community navigators
  • Develop bi-lingual materials for targeted population
  • Respond to community members who are seeking information regarding their legal rights in light of changed policies
  • Conduct trainings and educational presentations
  • Provide legal representation
  • Regularly meet with and represent NIJC’s interests to key partners, organizers, and stakeholders; which may require evening and weekend travel
  • Develop a strategy for cultivating and maintaining outreach networks
  • Analyze data to evaluate impact, provide monthly analysis on trends and opportunities, and revise strategy as appropriate
  • Ensure compliance with grants
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: Juris Doctor Degree required; minimum of 2 years of experience in human rights field, legal and/or communications work required. Minimum of 2 years of experience working in the immigrant rights field, including legal representation, organizing, or community outreach. 
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English and Spanish required. Ability to communicate articulately with internal and external audiences. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated competency in public speaking and strong interpersonal skills required.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.
  • Other Skills: Knowledge of: principles and practices of communications and public information techniques through different mediums, including print, television, and internet; writing and editing techniques for a variety of audiences. Ability to: assimilate and convey messages on a variety of issues relating to due process violations and immigration detention in a succinct and compelling way and tailored to different audiences; write effective copy, press releases, design and layout electronic and print newsletters and website pages; work independently with limited supervision; be goal-oriented and multi-task; have a diplomatic presence; develop and maintain good working relationships with a wide variety of peer organizations; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
