Position description:

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for routine animal care and husbandry.  They will also be responsible for the general cleaning of the facility and for operation of the cage wash equipment and autoclave.  Some lifting will be required in this role and the successful candidate should be able to lift 50lb.  The candidate will work in a team setting by bringing their technical skills to assist with project objectives.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Review, comprehend and comply with all SOPs and training pertaining to laboratory animals and staff safety

  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations

  • Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include performing daily water and cage checks; providing appropriate food and water; performing cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; recording animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols

  • Perform daily cage wash duties and sanitation, following sanitization schedules within vivarium

  • Receive, inspect and house incoming animals

  • Provide technical support for ongoing pharmacology studies

  • Communicate observations to scientific staff


Basic qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Minimum 2 years of directly related laboratory animal experience in an AAALAC accredited facility

  • Proficiency with rodent identification methods

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • AALAS certification

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in animal or life sciences field

 

Physical Demands/ Mental Demands/ Work Environment:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to collaboration and that contribute to a congenial work environment

  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail

  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
