Position description:

This role provides management and hands on support of IT services and systems deployed in support of Ironwood’s discovery and preclinical research operations.  The Manager, IT works closely with scientists, science leadership, and the IT organization to support the Lab Informatics and Research Informatics services, including systems such as ELN, LIMS, CDS, Lab Automation, Inventory, Compound Management, EH&S, Data Management and Archival (SDMS) and lab information management.  This role includes a hands-on technical component (~25%) to build, deploy, manage and support laboratory and research software and instrument interfaces.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with scientists, Informaticians, and scientific leadership to assess lab and research informatics needs, including instrument software and interfaces, lab automation and informatics data management.
  • Support lab and research informatics services within the framework of defined IT operating principles and in close coordination with IT Operations and End User Support services.
  • Provide direct hands on support and administration of various software platforms that support lab researchers including, but not limited to:
    • Electronic Lab Notebooks

    • Sample Management

    • Chemical Inventory

    • Chromatographic Data Systems

    • Spectroscopic Data Systems

    • Laboratory Robotics

    • Instrument Data Analysis

    • Data Management and Archival

    • Environmental Health and Safety

  • Coordinate day to day activities of a single contract resource providing laboratory IT support.
  • Work with internal stakeholders and external vendors to improve lab and research operations and data analysis by assisting subject matter experts with the selection, implementation, and support of software systems used by Ironwood researchers.
  • Manage IT projects that deliver new and improved lab and research informatics capabilities at Ironwood, leading a team of cross functional stakeholders and managing vendor activities as necessary.
  • Proactively partner with internal stakeholders across R&D labs to understand needs and provide excellent IT support of computerized systems supporting research activities;
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors providing software, service, and support of laboratory information systems;
  • Working with Quality Assurance, use risk-based approaches to assess compliance impacts and build computer systems validation activities into system implementation and change control activities where necessary;
  • Develop and maintain system documentation for supported applications, including change control and validation documentation where required.

 

Requirements:

  • 5-7 years’ experience working in an IT organization supporting a Pharmaceutical research environment, including support of laboratory IT systems;
  • Hands on experience with typical laboratory software systems (LIMS, ELN, CDS, Inventory, etc.);
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills –within IT as well as with scientists;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize among competing demands;
  • Ability to be self-directed and work independently within the framework of the IT and cross-functional scientific organization.
  • Experience in vendor management and contract negotiation;
  • Experience in biotech, pharma or life sciences a must;
  • Previous experience with one or more of the following systems is important: Waters Empower, MassLynx, and Nugenesis SDMS, Agilent Chemstation, CambridgeSoft/PerkinElmer ChemBioOffice and E-Notebook;
  • Exposure to computer systems validation and instrument qualification in a laboratory setting desirable;
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, science, or business.
