Description

Position description:

This role provides management and hands on support of IT services and systems deployed in support of Ironwood’s discovery and preclinical research operations.  The successful candidate will serve as the primary IT business partner for preclinical, developing strong relationships with scientists, science leadership, and the IT organization.  The Associate Director will manage the Lab Informatics and Research Informatics services, with responsibility for key systems such as ELN, LIMS, CDS, Lab Automation, Inventory, Compound Management, EH&S, Data Management and Archival (SDMS) and lab information management.  This role includes a hands-on technical component (~25%) supporting laboratory and research software and instrument interfaces.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with scientific leadership and other stakeholders to build application roadmaps, assessing current and potential long term needs, and identifying opportunities for leveraging scientific innovation through information technology solutions.
  • Manage and support lab and research informatics services within the framework of defined IT operating principles and in close coordination with IT Operations and End User Support services.   Assess service performance and adjust services as needed to support continuous improvement and/or respond to changes in business requirements.
  • Plan and manage IT projects that deliver new and improved lab and research informatics capabilities at Ironwood, leading a team of cross functional stakeholders and managing vendor activities as necessary.
  • Coordinate day to day activities of a single contract resource providing laboratory IT support.
  • With the assistance of other IT staff and vendor resources, prove direct hands-on support and administration of various software platforms that support researchers including, but not limited to the following types of systems:
  • Electronic Lab Notebooks
  • Sample Management
  • Chemical Inventory
  • Chromatographic Data Systems
  • Spectroscopic Data Systems
  • Instrument Data Analysis
  • Data Management and Archival
  • Environmental Health and Safety
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors providing software, service, and support of laboratory information systems;
  • Working with Quality Assurance, use risk-based approaches to assess compliance impacts and build computer systems validation and related qualification activities into system implementation and change control activities where necessary;
  • Develop and maintain system documentation for supported applications, including change control and validation documentation where required.

 

Basic qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, science or business + at least 10 years of professional IT experience, or;
  • Master’s degree in computer science, science or business + at least 7 years professional IT experience;
  • Previous professional work experience in life sciences industry required, with previous IT business partnering experience;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills – ability to engage with technical staff, scientists, and R&D leaders and tailor messages for the audience;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and teams;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize among competing demands;
  • Ability to be self-directed and work independently within the framework of the IT and cross-functional scientific organization.
  • Experience in vendor management and contract negotiation;

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • 12 + years working in an IT organization supporting life sciences;
  • Previous experience with one or more of the following systems: Waters Empower, MassLynx, Nugenesis SDMS, Agilent Chemstation, CambridgeSoft/PerkinElmer ChemBioOffice and E-Notebook;
  • Exposure to computer systems validation and instrument qualification in a laboratory setting desirable;
  • Hands on experience with typical laboratory software systems (LIMS, ELN, CDS, Inventory, etc.);
