WBEZ 91.5 FM Chicago, one of the largest, most decorated, aggressively creative, and journalistically ambitious public radio stations in the country, is seeking a talented news producer to join our award-winning news team in Chicago.

The news producer is a vital part of WBEZ’s newsroom, working in support of WBEZ’s daily news coverage, with a specific focus on supporting WBEZ’s afternoon broadcast of All Things Considered and digital properties via wbez.org. The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgement, a thirst for accurate, timely and insightful reporting, strong audio recording and editing skills, and the ability to write quickly and compellingly for broadcast.

Working closely with the PM editor, PM digital producer and All Things Considered anchor, the news producer assists in executing the day’s coverage from 10a to 6p, working with the PM editor to coordinate, prioritize and schedule stories and interviews for WBEZ’s daily news content across audio platforms. This is a rigorous and creative endeavor in which WBEZ seeks to reflect and shape the public conversation across the Chicago metro area. Duties include writing, editing and updating news copy; tracking down primary sources; recording and producing interviews for on-air anchors; editing and compiling actualities from newsmakers; recording and producing news-oriented podcasts and smart speaker briefings; and tracking major news stories that are of interest to a diverse audience in a metropolitan region of 9.5 million people.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with PM news editor, PM digital editor and Midday and All Things Considered anchors to ensure maximum relevance, accuracy and clarity in production of WBEZ’s afternoon news programming
  • Write, edit and prepare news copy for midday and afternoon newscasts, smart speaker briefings and related podcasts
  • Closely monitor a variety of local and national news sources for updates & insights
  • Support the midday and All Things Considered hosts by preparing additional continuity material for broadcast, including traffic, weather, feature leads, and promo copy
  • Conduct research, gather tape and make calls to gather and advance news
  • Edit copy for accuracy, relevance and clarity
  • Research, pitch, produce and edit live/taped interviews with Morning Edition anchor
  • Compile, record and edit smart speaker briefings, podcasts and other digital news content
  • Generate story ideas and project ideas
  • Write and voice stories
  • Pitch, produce, write and report content for the WBEZ news team – including newscast items, produced pieces, reports, and interviews
  • Substitute in for AM producers and others on the news team as needed
  • Participate in editorial activities of the department as assigned

 

Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience and skill in writing top notch broadcast copy, working with hosts, and producing audio for news programs.
  • Ability to write and report quickly with a high degree of accuracy in a fast paced news environment
  • Experience producing news content for social media and digital platforms
  • Demonstrated thirst for news, strong editorial judgment and ability to generate creative story ideas and to take initiative
  • Team player with high emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate effectively
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Passion for grappling with ideas critically -- your own and those of others
  •  Ability to think about big picture approaches to covering stories, issues and ideas, while also executing the many small details and tasks involved in production
  • Maintain high journalistic and ethical standards and ensure accuracy and fairness
  • Knowledge of Chicago and Illinois is a plus, but not required
  • Experience directing, voicing and editing others is a plus, but not required
