About Chicago Public Media
Chicago Public Media (www.chicagopublicmedia.org) is one of the largest and most respected public media organizations in the country. With an unparalleled reputation for creativity and innovation across all platforms, Chicago Public Media provides substantive news and insights, thoughtful conversation and meaningful connections to its diverse audiences throughout the Chicago area, as well as nationally and globally.
Chicago Public Media engages with its listeners and users across multiple platforms, including broadcast radio, digital streaming, and mobile apps. Its flagship station, WBEZ-Chicago (91.5 FM), delivers a weekly listening audience of over 550,000, and broadcasts throughout Chicago and the surrounding region. WBEZ’s website, wbez.org, is a top-performing website, serving 1.2 million monthly audio streams. WBEZ’s sister service, called Vocalo (91.1 FM, vocalo.org), targets a Millennial, multicultural audience through an urban alternative format that public radio has not traditionally served.
WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR news station, serves the community with fact-based, objective news and information. WBEZ’s award-winning journalists ask tough questions, dig deep for answers and expose truths that spark change and foster understanding. WBEZ Chicago is home to two daily local programs, The Morning Shift and Worldview, and a growing portfolio of popular podcasts, including the “Making” series of Making Obama and Making Oprah; Nerdette; and Sound Opinions. WBEZ Chicago has a legacy of innovation as the birthplace of nationally acclaimed programs such as This American Life, and Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! And the ground-breaking podcast, Serial.
With a strong membership base and consistent funding from a diverse group of corporate, philanthropic, individual and institutional sources, Chicago Public Media has a solid financial base from which to grow. Today, Chicago Public Media attracts nearly 88,000 members who support the organization. Membership represents approximately half of CPM’s total revenues and is the single largest source of funding.
Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, the Senior Director of Membership and Marketing is responsible for the organization’s largest source of revenue, membership, which generates approximately 50% of WBEZ’s annual revenues. Chicago Public Media is seeking a results-driven, analytical and creative leader to transform the way the organization acquires and retains members. Public media institutions represent the original “freemium” model businesses. The core product is provided at no cost to the consumer, but revenues are generated from building strong relationships with the audience that are then monetized by turning listeners into members. As a result, Membership is at the strategic core of the business both in terms of building loyalty with our audience and generating the primary source of revenue that supports the institution.
The essential functions described below are not all-inclusive and may change periodically to meet the needs of Chicago Public Media (CPM). The information contained in this job description is not intended to create any contractual or other legal commitment. Chicago Public Media may change the content or format of this job at any time in its sole and exclusive discretion without notice.
