Digital + Community Engagement Producer | Job Summary

Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM, is Chicago’s Urban Alternative, a format that features an eclectic mix of Hip-Hop, R&B, House music and more.   We believe that music is a gateway that allows us to amplify Chicago culture via profiles and discussions with artists, activists, and change makers.  Our radio station works at the intersection of music, storytelling and engagement to affect positive change in people’s lives. 

We are seeking a Digital + Community Engagement Producer that will own our digital presence, grow our audience, and position Vocalo as a destination for music, arts, and culture.  They will create, produce and distribute compelling, original content across Vocalo’s digital platforms (web, app, social media) and to help us translate these experiences IRL.  


The Digital + Community Engagement Producer will work closely with a team of hosts and producers to expand and deepen our engagement with diverse audiences and to help position Vocalo Radio as Chicago’s premiere destination for music and culture. 


In addition to our core format, we’re home to an outstanding DJ collective that features top local DJ’s spinning sets five nights a week (5 O’Clock mix, Live at Five); a daily morning program that features music and conversation hosted by Jill Hopkins and Jesse Menendez (Morning AMp); Reclaimed Soul, a weekly program that features deep cuts and rare gems from the golden era of soul, curated by Ayana Contreras; Latin Alternative music programming on Sundays with Jesus Echeverria and Rocio Santos; and a vibrant mix of music and Chicago stories throughout.


Our ideal Digital + Community Engagement Producer has experience working with Wordpress and is fluent in digital and social media platforms, working effortlessly to produce and publish stories, posts, pictures and videos to our website and our primary social media outlets (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter). You love the artists and music at the heart of our urban alternative format and possess a passion for growing and connecting young diverse audiences, particularly among Chicago’s Black and Latinx communities. You brim with creativity but know how to focus and deliver on deadline. Excellent writing and communication come naturally to you, as does telling stories that engage diverse audiences compellingly and authentically. You thrive in a collaborative, creative environment and love working with a wide array of colleagues and artists to help build Vocalo Radio into a truly vibrant cultural force.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


Position Vocalo’s digital platforms as Chicago’s premiere destination for music discovery

  • Grow reach and engagement on all of our digital/social properties
  • Develop an editorial calendar for vocalo.org
  • Optimize our audio posts with compelling copy, images, and story editing to expand the reach of artist interviews featured on 91.1 FM; identifies potential music artists features  
  • Create social media posts (such as images, polls, gifs) to promote live tune-in and encourage on-demand listening
  • Create chart listings for top played Vocalo songs and create content around new music discoveries that are in-line with our Urban Alternative music format (via youtube, Spotify, or other mechanisms)
  • Create content features around artists submissions received via vocalo.org/localmusic 


Elevate Chicago culture by highlighting content that elevates arts & community

  • Work with the on-air content team to produce and build out our This is What Chicago Sounds Like (#Chisoundslike) series as a multi-platform endeavor that profiles Chicago’s cultural leaders, artists, activists, and change makers
  • Identify relevant content to highlight from WBEZ and partners that elevate issues of impact in our local communities (pitches them to on-air team, profiles them on web/social media)  
  • Curate conversations that have aired on Vocalo 91.1 FM and amplifies them via our social media channels


Highlight things to do in Chicago that amplify Chicago culture and help curate IRL experiences that bring people together

  • Collaborate with CPM’s events and editorial teams to conceptualize how conversations around music and culture can translate into IRL settings for deeper engagement with our audiences

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience and understanding of how to attract, grow and engage digital audiences including, but not limited to, using social media, third-party aggregators, and content partnerships
  • Experience managing and working in WordPress or a similar content management system
  • A passion for creating content optimized for different digital and social media platforms, tailored to their very different creative constraints and opportunities
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with strong news judgement
  • Skilled at imagining and articulating how different social platforms might advance editorial strategies, as well as how to shape the approach to each outlet.
  • Strong understanding of social media copy and vernacular (use of emojis, hashtags, tagging, etc); Familiarity with social media management tools, is a plus
  • A demonstrated passion and understanding about Vocalo Radio’s mission, programming, and Chicago culture; plus experience in an industry where you’ve worked with artists, creators, or digital journalists as an integral part of your job
  • Able to travel to concerts, events, to capture and produce content, as necessary
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, and other multimedia software is a plus
  • Experience conceptualizing events that bring digital content and social media conversations to life and/or working with a team to execute 
  • Able to partner with brand marketing manager to implement a plan that drives followers, engagement, and conversation across all social arms for Vocalo Radio’s flagship accounts
  • Able to partner with the brand marketing manager to establish and track social media KPIs via regular reports and actionable insights
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Marketing, Arts, Communications or related field
