WBEZ has an opportunity for a reporting internship in our news room. The intern will gain hands on reporting experience in a major market news room. During their internship, the intern will learn the foundations of broadcast journalism. As part of their experience, the intern will learn broadcast news writing, how to report short news items for our local newscasts, attend press conferences and cover breaking news events. By the end of the internship, the intern will have learned how to edit audio, and report a news feature that will broadcast on air and online.
Extra consideration will be given to applicants currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from a journalism program. Potential interns should have some prior exposure to reporting, either through previous internships or student media. Prior exposure to radio journalism is helpful but not required, print majors are welcome. Interest and knowledge of Chicago politics and events are a plus.
Application Deadline is: Friday November 16, 2018
• The internship will start January 14 and last through June 28, 2019.
• This is a paid internship, $12.00 an hour.
• Internship hours are part-time, 24 hours (about three full days a week) during daytime business hours.
How We Select Interns
Our intern selection process is structured to gauge your writing and news judgement. The first round is us reading through cover letters and resumes. The second round is an interview with our selection committee, where we ask you to give story pitches and feedback about some of our programming . If you are second-round candidate, interviews will either be in person or via Skype if you are out of town.
Don’t Forget Your Cover Letter!
Cover letters help us learn a little bit about you, and what you hope to get out of an internship. It also gives us a sample of your writing style. Your cover letter should tell us why you want to pursue a career in journalism and media. We want to learn about your career goals and what type of skills you want to learn or strengthen in an internship. Want to make your cover letter really stand out? Include links to your portfolio or links to any news writing samples, podcasts, or story packages you may have done.
Applications without a cover letter will not be accepted.
