What we’re about:
Founded in 1946, our Hillel has fostered campus Jewish life for generations of students. WashU Hillel’s mission is to be the catalyst for Jewish life among college students at WashU. We foster an open, pluralistic Jewish community, connecting students with one another and with Jewish culture and traditions through service and social justice, Israel engagement, religious life, and social and leadership programs.
Since 1946, our Hillel has enhanced the lives of thousands of college students and helped Washington University cultivate one of the most vibrant campus Jewish communities in the country. Out of approximately 6,700 undergraduates currently attending WashU, we estimate that at least 26% (1,750+) are Jewish. In 2015-16, we engaged approximately 1,000 of these students and we are slated to exceed this number in 2016-17.
What St. Louis is about:
St. Louis is an accessible, friendly midwestern city boasting a variety of neighborhoods filled with excellent culture, great parks, events, festivals, a fast-growing startup scene, and kosher Ted Drewes frozen custard (recently rated best in the world). Situated in the heart of metropolitan St. Louis, our Hillel is steps away from Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the nation and home to the St. Louis Zoo, Art Museum, as well as other cultural institutions, all of which offer free admission. Washington University and WashU Hillel are also blocks away from the Delmar Loop, a colorful entertainment district with live music, international cuisine and abundant independent retail. St. Louis supports a growing Jewish community of over 61,000 and a vibrant, young Jewish community with a Moishe House, Next Dor, and many other organizations that cater to Jewish young adults. We can talk about our city all day, but we’ll end with a fun fact: St. Louis is consistently ranked as one of the most affordable cities in the country for recent college graduates! This might be why more and more millennials are flocking to the city.
WashU Hillel is affiliated with Hillel International. Hillel International enriches the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world, and envisions a world where every student is inspired to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning, and Israel.
